Schools are a class act when it comes to recycling
Lancashire schools have found new homes for dozens of pre-loved wooden stools as part of their efforts to prevent good items going to waste.

The sturdy items were awarded to schools for their efforts to promote recycling among family and friends.

The winning schools were Coppull Parish C of E School, Our Lady and All Saints Catholic Primary School, Parbold, and Carr Head Primary School, Poulton le Fylde.

County Councillor Albert Atkinson, deputy leader for Lancashire County Council, said: "Nobody wants good quality furniture, clothes, shoes, or electrical items to go to waste.

"We had a number of nice wooden stools donated which have years of life left in them and are perfectly suited for use in schools. We've awarded them to these schools which met our challenge to encourage more recycling in their communities by including recycling tips and information in their newsletters and websites.

"The council is working hard to ensure more of the items that we receive at our Household Waste Recycling Centres get re-used and recycled. We try to rescue as many good quality items as we can, and now have reuse shops at two of our sites to help put them back into the hands of people who want them.

"We are also asking people to think twice before throwing out things that may be of use to someone else.

"There are lots of convenient ways to do this, not just by taking things to our recycling centres. Donating unwanted items to charity shops helps them to raise much-needed cash. People should also think about using online options such as eBay, Freegle or GumTree, to sell or buy pre-loved items, and help reduce waste."

Both Garstang and Preston recycling centres have re-use shops.
