We are reading campaign to be launched in Lancashire schools
The We Are Reading in Lancashire schools campaign will be launched on Monday 12 March in Preston.

This year-long campaign will run until World Book Day 2019, and aims to encourage schools to sign a pledge urging pupils to read.

By taking part in the campaign schools will pledge their commitment to:

• Becoming a reading school
• Seeking out every opportunity to improve standards in reading at school
• Encourage reading for pleasure
• Enable children to read in-depth in a wide range of subjects, deepening their knowledge and understanding across the curriculum
• Work with other schools, local libraries and other partners to promote reading as a life-long skill

The campaign, launched at the Preston Marriott Hotel, will be attended by pupils, teachers and headteachers from schools across the county and by representatives of Lancashire's library service.

Local author and former headteacher, Martin Griffin, writer of the best-selling 'Lifers' will be speaking at the event. Author and former teacher Jon Mayhew, creator of 'The Monster Odyssey' series, will also be speaking at the launch.

County Councillor Susie Charles, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Schools, who will attend the event, said: "Reading is one of life’s greatest pleasures, but also plays a huge role in broadening our horizons and sharpening our imaginations, especially as children.

"I firmly support this campaign. Anything we can do to inspire children to read should be encouraged. I'm really looking forward to attending this event."

Throughout the year, schools will be encouraged to share all their reading activities through a half-termly newsletter and also on a Facebook page.

Schools can sign up to the campaign by emailing wearereading@lancashire.gov.uk
